Anticipation has already begun to mount for the upcoming Pokémon Nintendo Switch titles, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee.

The Pokémon games have traditionally allowed for players to trade and battle with each other, all the way back to Pokémon Red and Blue. Nostalgic fans have fond memories of the magic their link cables were capable of.

With these new titles however, those features won’t be free.

The Pokémon Company told Eurogamer that in order to battle and trade online with your friends, players will need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The games will also feature a somewhat slimmed down set of online features—which isn’t surprising given that the games themselves aren’t full Pokémon titles.

“Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! will have online play functionality.” a spokesperson told Eurogamer. “Battling and trading with other players over the internet or locally will be available in these games.”

“However, the feature set will be somewhat simplified in comparison to previous games in that there is no GTS, Wonder Trade, or Battle Spot (Rating Battle, Free Battle, and Online Competition, etc.) for example. Further details will be revealed at a later date.”

The Nintendo Switch Online service has been controversial. The decision to make cloud saves a paid feature has been unpopular with many players, and the other features are somewhat limited beyond a library of NES games and access to online play in most popular games.

A Nintendo Switch Online subscription will set you back $20 a year, $8 a quarter, or $4 a month depending on how you want to pay.
