Being completely honest, no game on the horizon holds as much promise for me as Cyberpunk 2077. Not only is it the new game from CD Projekt Red, makers of The Witcher 3, but it is based in the world of Mike Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk, my absolutely favorite RPG game when I was younger.
The game was originally teased what feels like forever ago, but this E3 brought us a new trailer.
Cyberpunk 2077 looks like everything I hoped it would be. The harsh clash of grim urban decay and neon advertising, weirdly augmented people, wild fashion, and big guns. The trailer flashes from people living underneath an overpass, to others sitting in first class, not seeming to care while the augments on a fellow passenger spark and burn out. Cyberpunk, as a genre, is at its best when it is forcing us to consider how we hold onto our humanity in a world that is become more and more reliant on technology. This is why I am so excited for this game. Too often science fiction games get lost in their exploration of the setting, while I am expecting CDPR and Mike Pondsmith to keep a strong focus on the people who live within that setting.
The trailer gives the strong impression that there is going to be a main character, so I am really hoping that we can build into some of the different classes that the original game had. It will be hard to build a main character that earns as much fan love as Geralt, but I am hoping CDPR are up to the task.
