What is a Tribute Chest in Destiny 2 Season of the Chosen?

You gotta work for them.

Tribute Chests can only be earned in the Battlegrounds, and only when you have a Challenger Medallion placed in your Hammer of Proving. To do this you will need to earn lots of Cabal Gold.

After that, open up your Quests tab and select the Hammer of Proving. In the item’s menu, you need to select a Challenge Medallion and slot it in the Hammer at a cost of 14 Cabal Gold. After that, you can run a Battleground in the Vanguard menu in the Director.

If you get to the end and defeat the boss, you will see a chest spawn in at the end, with three other chests around it. These are Tribute Chests, and you can smash one of them open with your hammer to get some additional rewards like specific types of Umbral Engrams.
